Enoch “Nucky” Johnson was the “boss” of Atlantic City, NJ during the roaring twenties. Taking up residence in the Ritz Carlton Hotel on the AC boardwalk, Nucky could always be found donning his raccoon fur coats and signature red carnation on his lapel.

During the 1920’s, Atlantic City served as America’s playground and a refuge from Prohibition. Nucky said of Atlantic City, “We have whiskey, wine, women, song and slot machines. I won’t deny it and I won’t apologize for it.” In addition to bootlegging, his crime organization was involved in gambling and prostitution around the city.

“Ordinary people avoid troubles. Extraordinary people turn them into advantage.”
– Enoch “Nucky” Johnson
