Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was known as one of the most infamous and feared gangsters of the early 20th century. Recognized for his charisma and good looks, he is often considered the first celebrity gangster. Siegel was one of the founding members of murder incorporated, a New York crime syndicate involved in bootlegging during Prohibition and hundreds of contract hits in the 1930’s and 40’s. After Prohibition was repealed in 1931, Siegel moved to Las Vegas where he opened the Flamingo Hotel & Casino, the first on the Las Vegas strip. On June 20, 1947, Bugsy Siegel was murdered at the home of his mistress in Beverly Hills, CA. The details surrounding his death are still a mystery, and the case remains open with the Los Angeles Police Department.
